Hannah Turner walked grudgingly down the hallways of Mercy Grace Hospital, where she just recently started working as a candy striper but also where both of her parents were doctors in the teen oncology wing of the hospital. She sighed as she looked out the window to see a fresh blanket of snow covering the ground.
I should be out there instead of in here. Hannah thought to herself as she remembered how she got stuck with the volunteer job…
“We think you should volunteer at the hospital over Christmas break,”
Hannah let her eyes dance between her mom and her dad trying to decide how she should react.
“But why?”
“We know you usually get bored over your vacations so we thought you should do this to keep yourself busy,” Her dad said.
“But I was going to hang out with Bella and Lily and then try to work on some of my writing. Shouldn’t that keep me busy enough over break?”
“You’ll still have time to see Bella and Lily and do your writing,” Her mom said in an attempt to break the tension that was obvious between father and daughter.
Hannah sighed knowing that it was useless to try and change her parents’ minds.
“Fine, when do I start?”
“The first day of your Christmas vacation, you have to be there by ten o’clock,”
Hannah was brought out of her thoughts by one of the orderlies coming up to her and she quickly turned to face him.
“What do you need me to do?”
“I need you to go to room 215 and clean it up”
Hannah’s first thought was why can’t you do it? But she didn’t say anything she just nodded and headed down the hall towards the room she was told to go to.
Hannah slowly opened the door and walked in the room to see that it was occupied by a guy that looked to be about her age or maybe a year older, she wasn’t sure. She had never been a good judge of how old someone was. She tried to be as quiet as possible while cleaning up the room but was obviously unsuccessful in doing so, seeing as he instantly woke up.
CHapter 2:
There’s a place in your heart, nobody's been,
Take me there.
Things nobody knows,
Not even your friends,
Take me there.
Tell me bout your momma, your daddy, your hometown,
Show me around,
I want see it all, don't leave anything out.---“Take Me There” Rascal Flatts
“I’m sorry I’ll be out in a minute,” Hannah said giving a sheepish smile.
The boy returned Hannah’s smile except his had more of a confidence to it.
“It’s okay, I wasn’t really sleeping, it’s kinda hard to do in this place.”
“I know what you mean,” Hannah said as she continued to clean.
“How?” the boy asked watching Hannah as she moved around the room.
Hannah hesitated before turning around to face him.
“When I was younger, like maybe four or five, my mom and dad would take me to work with them because they worked the night shift and I would have to sleep in one of the on call rooms. But eventually they worked it out where my aunt and uncle would come over to the house at night and watch me.”
The boy nodded.
“Your parents work here? Who are they, if you don’t mind me asking.”
Hannah smiled slightly.
“I don’t mind, they’re Dr. Noah and Audrey Turner,” Hannah explained.
The boy nodded again before speaking.
“Let me guess, your parents talked you into doing the volunteer thing right?”
How did he know about the volunteer thing? Hannah asked herself hoping her shock wasn‘t obvious.
As if he had read her mind he pointed to the t-shirt, she was wearing that said Mercy Grace Volunteer
“You’re wearing the shirt the volunteers usually wear.”
Hannah nodded.
“Okay, but how did you guess about my parents roping me into the volunteer thing?”
“I just asked if they had, that’s all.”
Hannah sighed.
“Well if you want to know so badly, yes, they roped me into it because they didn’t want me to get bored during Christmas vacation.”
Before Hannah or the boy could say anything one of the orderlies came to the door, actually, it was the same orderly that had sent Hannah to the room in the first place.
Hannah rolled her eyes as he gave her the signal to hurry up and she put her hand up telling him she’d be out in a minute and to go on.
The orderly just rolled his eyes and proceeded to go on down the hall.
After Hannah was sure the orderly was gone, she turned back around.
“I better go before I get in trouble,”
“Yeah you better,”
Hannah walked over to the door and had it half way open when she heard his voice again.
“My name is Shane by the way,”
Hannah smiled warmly.
“Hannah,”
After that, she quietly slipped out the door.
